Call the midwife, series 9,the RadioTimes photoshoot

09/07/2019

Hi Nadia,

I hope you are well! Was wondering whether you’re interested in doing the jewellery for this….

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with costume designer Claire Lynch on a couple of films as well as series 8 of Call the Midwife.  Her briefs to me are brief,  but I am now familiar with her passion for costume and her eye for detail , so we have a great understanding.

For this shoot I was given 3 images taken from the original 1965 Vogue shoot of the YSL ‘Mondrian dresses’ , the accessories were really entirely up to us to create and design at our studio.

‘Escaping’ to 60’s fashion is my happy place in any case, so it was a task my team and I relished.

We focused primarily on two aspects which were geometry and colour.  However, instead of echoing the square and rectangular silhouettes we chose circles and curves with geometrical pattern inlays. And then of course there are those extra large 60’s pearl drop earrings, possibly too heavy for a night out but work perfectly on a shoot.

It took a total of 6 months from brief to development to shoot to publication.  Having seen the ‘behind the scenes pics’ the hardest thing was keeping quiet about it, but we did.

We can finally shout about, what a perfectly beautiful cover and shoot!

Running up that hill

Just a day left before the year is over and as I sit at my desk, reviewing 2015, the enormity of what we have done over the past 12 months is quite staggering. So much so that I am really not sure where to begin.

I guess I may as well start with the highlight of the year, which was winning the runner up Award for ‘Most Enterprising business’ from the Federation of Small Businesses.

BLK-&-WHT

Being nominated was exciting enough, celebrating on the night with my motley crew was great, winning felt like having my cake and eating it.  Before the night ended, changes were heading our way that are now forming the backbone for an interesting and new journey that we at Nadia Minkoff London have already begun.  Recognition for fashion from the financial sector is never easy to get, nor one to be taken lightly and I am very proud and excited that we have been given the opportunity to work and be mentored by none other than Grant Thornton. Who said number crunching, spreadsheets and forecasts aren’t creative? They are, very much so!

We’re also up for the Dot London Award, in the ‘best lifestyle’ category. The awards will be held at the new Savoy Place, hosted by Katie Derham.  River views all round, entrepreneurs, dragons and investors, at the ready.

Who, what and wear

I can’t quite believe the last time I actually put pen to paper ( fingers to keyboard) and blogged was in July!

Wasn’t being lazy, just incredibly busy and it’s amazing how once you let time slip it snowballs before you know it.        So I am making my New year resolution now at the end of November, no point waiting, and it is to make sure that I no longer have such long lapses.

I guess first thing first, to get back into the swing of things, a quick recap of what we’ve been up to since July, and also what and wear??

In August we won the runners up award for Most innovative Business at the London FSB awards, what a night! what a surprise! we’ve not looked back since , it’s been a whirlwind.

In Sept we updated our on-line shop with the new Winter 2015 lines. And our best-sellers?  Crystal skulls and midi totes

Skull & shard earrings, black

Sort my summer 2015 wardrobe out now?… you must be joking/ Nadia Minkoff London for @ Women Talking magazine

With the festive season well and truly over it feels like we are now into the long haul of winter, it’s cold, pretty miserable and the next holiday is several months away. The idea of getting ready for summer 2015 right now might seem quite ridiculous but in fact, it’s not a bad plan. The thing is, now happens to be the perfect time to de-clutter your wardrobe- it’s too cold to be outside, you’ve eaten and drank too much over the holidays and are trying to avoid going out ….Now is the time to sink your teeth into something positive and whilst the sales are still on it is actually a good time to acquire some real ‘keepers’ – you know, the current trends and colours which are carrying straight through to summer.

As a designer, we showed our summer 2015 collection over 6 months ago, in fact at the moment we are completing all our deliveries for summer 2015 and come Feb 1st we will be previewing our Winter 2015 range. The year seems to get shorter and shorter and the seasons are all muddled but on the positive side I have some great inside knowledge of what’s in store for summer 2015, knowledge I am going to share it with you in the hope that it provides some much needed January cheer.

So here goes, my top tips for your summer 2015 keepers:

Give me monochrome-Black & white, monochrome- sounds familiar? Well, it’s a classic but it’s huge again, so any black trousers and any black jackets are most definitely keepers, what you need to invest in is a new crisp white t-shirt or a crisp white top, I like the Julietta top from Hobbs, currently reduced to £26.00

White-Julietta-top,-Hobbs

White boots are super cool to go with this look, was anyone brave enough to invest in white boots this winter? If so they are most definitely keepers. And if you are looking to invest how about these white beauties from Aldo

White-Sigiletto-boots-Aldo

Nude/ blush/shell pink- Call it what you like, this is a big trend that isn’t going away. A Nude top and nice jeans are definitely keepers. A Nude dress with some sheer is an absolute summer must have and if you don’t have one, this one from Mint Velvet ticks all the boxes

Shell-pink-jacquard-dress,-mint-velvet

Anything red- Red took winter by storm and is continuing through to summer. If your complexion allows then go red all the way- dress, top, jeans… but if you like red in moderation the best way to get it in there is on the accessory side and red handbags are most definitely leading the way – every girls favourite arm candy. So if you have a Red bag it’s a keeper, if you don’t I have to recommend my very own red The Cut bag , currently on sale at Wolf & badger https://www.wolfandbadger.com/the-cut-red/

THE-CUT-red-front

Other keepers are:
• Jumpsuits- short sleeves, long sleeves, fitted or loose, wear them with your white ankle boots and a belt.
• Khaki is a hot new colour for summer 2015, check out your wardrobes, you must have some Khaki in there from a few years back.
• Natural knits- are big now and carrying through to summer, if you have some that are thin and loosely knitted, team them up with Khaki shorts, or jeans and colour block them with a red bag!

WOMEN TALKING MAGAZINE,  are offering one lucky winner the opportunity to WIN a Nadia Minkoff London  ‘The Cut’ handbag in red, for all the details head on over to this page, good luck!!!

For the love of Blogging

Photo-23-11-2014-20-46-23

Despite my efforts and good intentions to keep you up to date with our comings and goings in the run up to Christmas I seem to be falling seriously behind schedule… but I am attempting to ensure I catch up by the time Christmas is here , so not long now.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the lovely Bloggers who attended the Bloggers Love event earlier this month and spared the time to chat to us and even better, to Blog about us!

Blogging is a ‘common’ practice nowadays, so much so that perhaps those of us who read Bloggs take it for granted.  What might not be so obvious to us readers is the time and effort invested by Bloggers to research, photograph, interview, write, edit, publish and ultimately entertain and inform. One of the best things for me as a designer who interacts with Bloggers regularly is the immense enthusiasm and dedication they posses.. and I have yet to come across a Blogger who is not that way inclined. It’s great building a relationship with a Blogger, each one has a unique handwriting, a different eye, a different perspective and it’s always nice to see their take on our designs.

Here are the all vital links and some great weekend reading for you from the Bloggers Love Hub event… maybe even some good shopping ideas for Xmas.

Stop Press! Stop Press!

Over the next couple of weeks London will be a flurry of press days. Traditionally with fashion weeks and  the catwalks over,  press are invited to a ‘Press day’, a slightly more relaxing affair where over a coffee and a croissant ( for those who dare) there is an opportunity to review the forthcoming collection, receive press packs and information and take those all necessary ‘quick snaps’ to make sure you can plan your features for the months ahead.

Happy to say that following our catwalk with Nico Didonna, which was held this year in NY and Philadelphia we too are holding our very own ‘press day’ smack bang in the centre of London and will be previewing our Spring Summer 2015 collection. Wed 5th and Thur 6th November are our big days, truth be told, we can’t wait!

All bloggers and press are welcome, email your details to Sawako@nadiaminkoff.com and we will be waiting to meet you! ( and yes, we do have plenty of croissants !)

If you have something to say…. Blog about it!

This week I attended the Bloggers Love Fashion week, a true eye opener for me. The 3 day event took place on the 7th floor of The Penthouse, 1 Leicester Square, smack bang in the heart of London, with some pretty spectacular views over the square and beyond. I’ve never done an event like this so confess I was a complete novice but I was so impressed with the fellow exhibitors-  space was tight but they were so organised with their collection and promotional material. They had a variety of events going on, as for Nadia Minkoff London on the Monday we took part in the ‘Bloggers Boutique’ At 17:00 the doors opened and in came a flood of beautifully dressed bloggers, camera in hand and plenty of smiles. Snap, snap, chat chat and before I knew it the night was up. On Wed we took part in the Bloggers Tea Party, an opportunity to tell them all about us in detail and find out about their blogs. ..after which it’s all about checking to see what they had to say!  Most bloggers have a day job and blog at of passion in their spare time, a totally fresh and different perspective on fashion to that of the glossies, more personal, more raw, more current- I really loved it.

From catwalk to high street

It must be obvious by my lack of posts since our London Fashion Week catwalk that I’ve just not had the time to write, so much so that I actually feel like I have writers block today when in fact- I have so much to say!

The press have been very kind to us this time round, we are loving the attention and the interest which, we seem to be receiving daily, our press page for Sept is nice and full and October looks very promising too!

But the nicest part of it all, as a designer, is seeing how our catwalk creations translate from the runway to the high street. At Nico Didonna’s shop you can now treat yourself ( and yes, it is a treat) to one of his amazing catwalk creations complete with our Nadia Minkoff London accessories.  One of the oldest and most established UK brands have bought some of our  catwalk statement pieces for their stores, soon to hit their shelves. It’s a real move for them from very classy to very trendy!

We are currently working on a range of bespoke catwalk inspired pieces, very glamorous but we think timeless for a fantastic new  website. And our on website is getting ready to embrace our AW2013 range including a whole section of our catwalk one off’s!

That said, our next LFW catwalk is scheduled to take place in Feb 2014, so work on our Winter 2014 collection will start in earnest by the end of this month. Always one step ahead, that’s the name of the game.
